this is Yum Cha!
By Franz Scheurer
Strap the surfboard to the
car, drive to Chinatown, catch a wave and
enjoy the surf…
Maybe not!
Drive to Bondi and enjoy
Sydney's best Yum Cha?
Absolutely!
A
friend of mine, who sort of qualifies as
a local, has been in my ear about the fabulous
Yum Cha they serve from Thursday to Sunday
lunch at mu
shu restaurant + bar
in Bondi. Although I know I have to take
his palate seriously I didn't exactly rush
to
mu shu restaurant + bar
to try this, but eventually it was easier
than listening to my mate's nagging.
I
have already written about mu
shu restaurant + bar,
its fabulous fit-out, great food and Ifuntastic'
atmosphere so I won't bore you with these
details. But I will wax lyrical about the
fabulous kitchen team, in what must be Sydney's
most open kitchen, who creates Yum Cha dishes
of a freshness and complexity I have not
eaten before.
There are 25 different dishes
on the menu (some available with different
cooking method options). Bring some friends,
take a few kids or if you don't have any,
borrow some; get a party together and try
all the dishes if you can. Every single
one is a knockout. If you don't have any
friends, are destined to dine alone of with
your partner, then I suggest you start by
trying my favourite dishes: 'Pork, prawn
and foie gras siu mai with honey soy dipping
sauce', 'Duck and red curry spring rolls
with papaya relish', 'Silken tofu with eggplant
and black bean' and my absolute favourite
'Crisp pastry with guinea fowl and crab
meat', then come back the next day and the
next until you've tried it all.
To have total comfort food
meet culinary artistry in one place is rare.
Here it is an absolute.
